Why Ritual Without Character Fails
In the sacerdotal teachings of Akurẹ́, a Babaláwo can perform the most complex Ebọ, prepare the most potent Àkòṣe, and consecrate the highest shrines. However, if the consultant returns to their daily life acting with cruelty, dishonesty, arrogance, or deceit, the spiritual shield is instantly fractured.
Rituals awaken opportunity, dissolve external blockages, and grant vital force (AṣẹPoder y Autoridad. La fuerza vital que permite que nuestras intenciones y oraciones se conviertan en realidad.Explore in Glossary →). But character (Iwà Pẹ̀lẹ́Buen Carácter. La integridad y el equilibrio emocional que permiten que las bendiciones de Ifá se manifiesten.Explore in Glossary →) is the container that holds the blessing. A broken container cannot hold water, no matter how pure the stream.
The Essential Virtues of Traditional Ifá
The Ifá corpus outlines specific virtues required to maintain alignment with Orí:
- ◈Sùúrù (Patience): The father of all good character (Sùúrù ni baba ìwà). The ability to endure trials without compromising one's principles.
- ◈Òtítọ́ (Truthfulness): Speaking and acting in harmony with reality. Truth is the divine covenant upon which Ọ̀rúnmìlà stands.
- ◈Ìtẹríba (Humility and Respect): Honoring elders, acknowledging the limits of human knowledge, and bowing before divine wisdom.
- ◈Àánú (Compassion): Protecting the vulnerable, nourishing the hungry, and avoiding unnecessary harm to any living creature.
At IFA Sudamérica, we teach our students and consultants that authentic initiation into Ifá is not a title of prestige, but a lifelong commitment to ethical excellence. We measure true spiritual power not by theatrical display, but by the peace, wisdom, and nobility of one's character.
