Who are the Egúngún?
Egúngún are not wandering ghosts or dark spirits. They are the elevated, deified ancestors who lived righteous lives on Earth, cultivated Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́, fulfilled their destiny, and transitioned to Ọ̀run where they now hold divine authority (AṣẹPoder y Autoridad. La fuerza vital que permite que nuestras intenciones y oraciones se conviertan en realidad.Explore in Glossary →) to assist their descendants.
When an individual experiences unexplained financial stagnation, severe relationship breakdowns, or health challenges that echo across family generations, Dáfá frequently reveals that the ancestral court requires acknowledgment and pacification.
The Liturgy of Ancestral Connection
In the tradition of Akurẹ́, honoring Egúngún involves specific liturgical elements:
- ◈Oorun Egúngún (The Ancestral Shrine): The consecrated physical space where cold water, gin, kola nuts (Obi Abata), and sacred meals are offered with precise incantations.
- ◈Àdúrà Egúngún (Ancestral Prayers): Reciting the praise names (Oríkì) and accomplishments of deceased lineage elders to invoke their protective presence.
- ◈Ebọ Egúngún: Sacrificial offerings determined by Dáfá to remove inherited burdens and restore vitality to the family tree.
Before appealing to any external Òrìṣà, a person must ensure that their immediate bloodline ancestors are peaceful and pleased. When the ancestors stand behind you, no negative force (Ajogun) can overwhelm your life.
